Being a Data Scientist involves a wide variety of different skills which range from the technical and mathematical to business and communication. The most critical skill for a data scientist is curiosity and a willingness to explore to uncover the truth.

It depends on what industry you are working in, but for us in policing, it is about having that enquiring mind that can help us understand a problem and, on that basis, develop solutions to tackle it. It is not about the technical skills per-se, but understanding the ‘business problem’.

Head of Data Science

Data Science is a very broad area and the demands on a data scientist to be an expert in all the key areas and ever-expanding list of technologies can be very strong. In my opinion, the most important quality is to have a natural curiosity about all things data and the ability to carry out independent research. This enables and ensures a data scientist will always be able to learn what they need to know to solve any business problem they face.
